The roofs on this page aren't stock photos or projects from somewhere else with a town name added to the page. They're actual TopDog roofing projects completed on Hight Road in Dayton.
They also show why there isn't one universal answer for every aging roof. One property involved an aging roof system across both the home and a woodworking shop. Another homeowner was dealing with recurring ice-dam leaks around dormers.
Different problems call for different details. Our job is to understand what's happening, explain it clearly and build the roofing system around what that particular home actually needs.
HIGHT ROAD • DAYTON • PROJECT 01
The 3-tab roofs had reached the end of the road.
Both the house and woodworking shop were covered with aging 3-tab shingles that had moved well beyond their useful service life.
Granule loss was widespread, shingle mat was becoming visible in areas, and nail pops were appearing throughout the existing roofing. At that point, this wasn't a roof where another round of spot repairs made much sense.
Heavy granule loss, exposed shingle mat in areas and scattered nail pops were signs that the existing 3-tab roof had reached the point where replacement made sense.
The new architectural shingle system gives the house a much cleaner appearance while replacing the deteriorated 3-tab roofing with a complete new roof system.
MORE THAN NEW SHINGLES
The details underneath and around the roof matter too.
A roof replacement isn't just swapping one shingle for another. This Hight Road project included upgrades throughout the roofing system.
New Duration architectural shingles in the Sand Castle color.
New self-adhered ice and water protection installed as part of the new roof system.
New synthetic felt installed beneath the field shingles.
New venting VELUX skylights with blinds were installed and integrated into the new roofing system.
New lead flashing was installed at the chimney rather than relying on deteriorated roofing details from the old system.
A new ridge vent was incorporated into the replacement system.
Brown Lamb & Ritchie double-lip drip edge was selected to complement the new Sand Castle roof.
SAME PROPERTY • SECOND STRUCTURE
The woodworking shop needed the same treatment.
The detached woodworking shop was part of the same Hight Road project. Its old 3-tab shingles were also replaced so the property had a consistent, updated roofing system across both structures.
The shop's roofing was also beyond the point where continuing to patch an aging 3-tab system was the sensible long-term option.
New architectural shingles brought the shop up to the same standard and appearance as the main house.

Ice dams were turning an old roof into an active leak problem.
This second Hight Road home also had worn-out 3-tab shingles, but the homeowner had another problem: ice dams were contributing to leaks around the dormers.
Instead of treating the new roof as a simple shingle swap, we extended the Grace ice & water protection up beyond the dormer areas where the homeowner had been experiencing problems.
FROM OLD ROOF TO NEW SYSTEM
Four stages of the replacement.
The aging roof had reached the end of its useful life while ice damming was contributing to leak problems around the dormers.
The existing shingles and underlayment were stripped away, exposing the roof deck so the new system could start from a properly prepared surface.
Grace ice & water protection was carried up past the dormers to address the area where ice dams had previously contributed to leakage.
The finished roof received new architectural shingles, synthetic underlayment, ridge ventilation and new drip-edge detailing.
BUILT AROUND THE PROBLEM
A replacement should address why the old roof was giving you trouble.
On this home, simply installing new shingles over the same basic details would have missed the bigger issue.

Extended up past the dormers where the home had experienced ice-dam-related leakage.
New synthetic underlayment used throughout the appropriate remaining roof areas.
New ridge ventilation incorporated into the replacement roof.
New double-lip drip edge installed along the eaves.
The waterproofing strategy was adjusted specifically around where the homeowner had experienced problems.
REPAIR OR REPLACE?
Not every Dayton roof needs to be replaced.
These Hight Road roofs were worn beyond reasonable repair. Plenty of other roofing problems aren't.
Fix the problem when the surrounding roof still has life.
A leak doesn't automatically mean you need a complete roof. If the failure is isolated and the surrounding system is still serviceable, repair may be the better answer.

No. A localized flashing, pipe boot, shingle or penetration problem can often be repaired when the surrounding roofing still has useful life. The roofs shown above had broader deterioration that made replacement the better option.
What does exposed shingle mat mean?
Asphalt shingles are covered with protective granules. As a roof ages and loses granules, the underlying shingle material can begin to become visible. Significant granule loss and exposed mat are signs we consider when evaluating the remaining life of an older roof.
Can ice dams cause leaks around dormers?
Yes. Dormers create roof transitions and areas where snow, ice and water can collect. On the second Hight Road project, the homeowner had experienced ice-dam-related leakage around the dormers, so the new ice & water protection was extended beyond those problem areas.
Does TopDog replace skylights during a roof replacement?
Yes. When appropriate, an existing skylight can be replaced while the surrounding roofing is already removed. On the first Hight Road project, new venting VELUX skylights with blinds were installed as part of the new roof system.
